ITAM connects finance, procurement, IT and security around one accurate record of every hardware and software asset you own.
What ITAM really means
IT Asset Management is the discipline of tracking every technology asset — hardware, software, cloud subscriptions and licences — across its full lifecycle, from request and purchase to retirement and disposal.
Done well, ITAM answers four questions at any moment: what do we own, where is it, who is using it, and what is it costing us?
Why it matters to leadership
Without ITAM, organisations overspend on duplicate purchases, miss software audit exposure, and lose devices that carry sensitive data. Industry studies regularly find 20–30% of IT spend can be optimised through better asset visibility.
ITAM also underpins compliance frameworks such as ISO/IEC 19770, ISO 27001 and data-protection regulations, where knowing your assets is the first control.
The core building blocks
A central asset register or CMDB, automated discovery, clear ownership and assignment, lifecycle policies (procurement, refresh, disposal), and regular reconciliation against finance records.
ITAM is split into two practical disciplines — Hardware Asset Management (HAM) and Software Asset Management (SAM) — supported by discovery tooling.
Where to start
Baseline your estate with a discovery scan, reconcile it with purchase records, assign owners, and define KPIs such as asset accuracy, utilisation and cost per user. Improve in 90-day cycles rather than attempting a big-bang rollout.
