A practical checklist for secure ITAD and data erasure

15 September 2026 · 5 min read · Sanjeev Soni

Retiring hardware safely means verified sanitisation, a clean chain of custody and documentation your auditors can trust.

Define the standard up front

Agree the sanitisation method (for example, aligned to NIST SP 800-88 guidance) and which device types need physical destruction before any asset leaves site.

Protect the chain of custody

Serialised asset lists, sealed transport and reconciliation at the processing facility close the gaps where devices typically go missing.

Insist on evidence

Per-device erasure certificates, recycling documentation and EPR-aligned records should be delivered as standard — not on request.
